Why It Matters
Why AI Governance Matters
The common path
Many organisations begin their AI journey by purchasing new tools.
The successful path
The most successful organisations begin by establishing clear governance.
Without clear expectations, employees are left making their own decisions about confidential information, customer data, copyright, acceptable use and human oversight. This increases legal, operational and reputational risk.
An AI Policy provides practical guardrails that encourage innovation while protecting your organisation, employees and customers.

My Background
Why I Created This Framework
Over the past several years, I have developed governance frameworks and organisational policies as part of my executive leadership roles within South African sport.
As Chair of the Coaches Commission for Rowing South Africa (RowSA) and as a member of the Brand, Marketing, Commercialisation and Communications Commission of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), I have contributed to the development of governance policies that support responsible decision-making, organisational accountability and long-term sustainability.
Working in governance taught me that successful change rarely begins with technology.
It begins with clear principles, defined responsibilities and practical frameworks that give people confidence to act.
That same philosophy has shaped this AI Governance Framework.
Eight Governance Principles
The Framework is Built Around Eight Principles
Instead of focusing only on restrictions, the framework encourages responsible innovation through eight practical governance principles:
Human Accountability
People remain accountable for decisions supported by AI.
Responsible Innovation
Use AI to improve productivity and create value while managing risk.
Transparency
Be open about the appropriate use of AI in business processes and communications.
Privacy & Confidentiality
Protect personal information, confidential information and intellectual property.
Fairness
Reduce bias and ensure AI is used ethically and responsibly.
Accuracy
Always verify AI-generated outputs before relying on them.
Security
Protect organisational information through appropriate governance and controls.
Continuous Improvement
Review, learn and adapt as AI technologies continue to evolve.
These principles provide a practical foundation for organisations of any size and industry.
Implementation Checklist
AI Implementation Checklist
Included at the end of the framework is a practical implementation checklist that helps organisations move from policy to action. It covers key implementation activities including:
Executive sponsorship
Governance responsibilities
AI tool approval
Information classification
Cybersecurity
Employee training
Human oversight
Incident reporting
Compliance monitoring
Policy review
It’s designed to help leadership teams understand what “good AI governance” looks like from day one.
